Social Determinants of Information Systems Use: a Network-anayltic Approach Social Determinants of Information Systems Use: a Network-analytic Approach*

The social group of which an individual is a part will affect how that individual uses information systems (IS). The social group will affect how an information system is interpreted and used. The social group will also place pressures and demands on IS usage. A field study of this idea was conducted. The concept of structural equivalence, operationalized by blockmodeling, was used to measure the effect of the social group on individual information systems usage. The results of the field study show that structural equivalence is related to IS usage, but this relationship is different for different information systems.
